Sandburg finding the offensive touch...

| | Comments (3) | TrackBacks (0)

Over the past decade, there are two things that can be said about the Sandburg soccer programs. The Eagles have always seemed to produce great defensive stars, but have always been lacking the true attacking offensive player.

Since the days of Katie Hertz and Tim Regan in the late 1990s, you would be hard pressed to find a standout offensive player that played at the Orland Park school.

But this spring, Sandburg forward Taylor Moesle has been rising to the occasion. The junior currently has 10 goals and 13 assists, and recently scored twice and assisted three times in the first 15 minutes against Stagg.

And to no surprise, the Eagles have another rising defensive star in goalie Victoria Kappel. The freshman has seven shutouts in 10 games.

Lake Forest High school beat Mundelien 2-1. In fact the possesion was probably even more in LF's favor. The only two games LFHS has lost was to ranked HF and ranked St. Charles North. The game against SCN was LF's third of the day to SCN's second. It took 75 minutes for SCN to score the game's lone goal. In addition LFHS's three top outside mids were injured and on the bench as well as their senior starting left back. All I request is a reasonable explanation why Mundelien is up and coming and LFHS is not worth mentioning. Thank you

TROST RESPONDS: Lake Forest lost twice last week, no matter what day it was. That's why or they would have been.

Joe,

Intersting point about Lake Forest... how much stake do you put in strength of schedule... how do you define success in a season? you wrote a column a little while back about stacking your schedule and is it worth it with how the IHSA seeds teams, but also do you feel a sense of accomplishment...

I was wondering your take on it specific to Huntley... who is 17-0, but has not played anybody of note at all... what will make their season successful? If they win the Fox Valley Fox division, but then get creamed by Maine South or even earlier in the Sectional? Is there season then a success??? just curious...

TROST RESPONDS: It depends what you consider success? But you also have to remember some programs have to take steps, and this is one step Huntley is taking. Huntley has inquired about joining the Pepsi Showdown next spring, so it is looking toward the future.

How can a player score twice and assist 3 times in 15 minutes when only 3 goals were scored? Sandburg only scored 3 goals in that time span. Did she pass the ball to herself then score? If so, that would be an unassisted goal. If that is the case, maybe her stats are inflated. Just keepin' it real.
