Fenwick may have finished last season with a 10-4-6 overall record and a 4-3-2 East Suburban Catholic showing, but the Friars are always one of the area teams on the brink of making some noise each spring.
Is this the spring Fenwick comes through or will the Friars be pushed back to an average program?
Here's Fenwick coach Chris Richter's thoughts:
CK: What did you learn from your first year of coaching that will help you this year?
CR: "When you install a new system, the first place that you see the work and commitment of the players is on defense. We posted shutouts in nearly half of our games last year. As long as we maintain that discipline as we grow into how our offense works, that's when we really start to win the flow of the game."
CK: What is the biggest key for you guys to be successful this year?
CR: "Midfield play is the key. We're going to be leaning heavily on a few players to not only control the central portion of the field, but also coordinate our defensive pressure and cover. It's a major responsibility, and the team is going to be counting on vocal leadership out of that core."
CK: Between the East Suburban conference and the Pepsi Showdown, you will be tested early. Are the girls ready for the challenge? In the past, there have been some weak Fenwick teams from a mental standpoint and then there have been some tough teams.
CR: "Weak teams and strong teams aren't all that different. It's just what is happening when no one is watching or cheering. Great teams sacrifice a small smile now for an ear-to-ear smile later. The glory from a hard practice in March isn't felt until May. There's an opportunity for a few people, notably junior midfielders Ellie Galvin and Serafina Nuzzo, to change the tone of Fenwick soccer for this year and beyond."
