The IHSA ScoreZone, which is actually a great resource (see I praise the IHSA, too), is reporting New Trier defeated Chicago Academy 17-0 tonight.
Please, someone - anyone - tell me that is a typo.
If it isn't, I encourage you to stop back here tomorrow.
Another thought - why do Barrington and St. Viator seem to struggle in the postseason?
And finally - surprise, surprise - four Public League teams played one another in the Class AA regional semifinals at Clemente today. Guess what? No scores posted. Blame it on the coaches, blame it on the school. At the end of the day, this is another basic, basic thing the Public League Sports Adminstration office should be following through on.
It's time for someone to be held accountable.
As one Public League coach wrote today, he can count 118,000 reasons why it's time for someone to be held accountable.

Chicago Academy lost to New tier 17-0
Having known and respected the Trevian Soccer Program for a long time, this is truly a low point in their historic 38 years of tradition. The New Trier Boys Soccer program's own philosophy includes "As a team one of our goals every year is to make it downstate!!" -http://www.newtrier.k12.il.us/athletics/sports/bsoccer/rules.htm
The question is ... at what cost?
OK Joe. Don't get yourself all hyperventilated by the NT score. They are not the first, and won't be the last team, that has these lopsided scores in the opening round of the playoffs.
Yes, NT could have done some other things on the field instead of scoring. But when you have a team as (hmmm...what's a PC word for BAD?) mismatched as the Academy team was, you have to expect these types of things to happen. How about railing against the IHSA to insitute a playoff system similar to football where not every team gets into the playoffs? Why do we have to have this "everyone makes the playoffs" AYSO mentality in the IHSA soccer system? Would you have been happier if it was 11-0 or 8-0 or 9-0, like some other scores I saw posted in the playoffs yesterday? So, yeah, the NT bench players were overzealous for running up the score - shame on them. But I think the deeper problem is the playoff system - everyone makes it, geographical sectional placements etc. - that is the real culprit here.
I find it quite amazing here that we are discussing the scoreline in this game . I have been around this sport for 40 years both here and overseas and I have never seen such comments ever regarding a match scoreline .
I have seen this New Trier team play . They are very good . Obviously , Chicago Academy was overwhelmed and in no way does that reflect on their program . A scoreline like this reflects badly on the sport , and is no fun for players, coaches or fans . Soccer does not have a slaughter rule . Forcing your team to play 2-3 touch before shooting , or keep-away is just as humiliating for the weaker team as the bloated scoreline . The fault is the system.
Let me ask a question ??? How many times do we see teams like Man Utd , Real Madrid , or AC Milan playing teams from 4-5 even 6 divisions lower . The answer is almost never , and if they do , it's only because that team has played through qualifying rounds to get there .
There are only 7-8 teams in that Super Sectional which could be considered good sides . The other teams should play a qualification system to get to play the stronger schools . Sorry , people , not everyone wins in my world .
Don't blame those boys at New Trier - that score hurt them as much as anyone .
This is why the Class system needs to be overhauled and the IHSA needs to act fast
Well said jw. Joe?
TROST RESPONDS: We're talking about high school sports. As one coach said this morning, and I quote: "When you are vested in education and working with adolescents who are privileged in so many ways, you only have a few "teachable" moments to instruct how to handle situations that involve humility and compassion. Running up a score to 17 teaches the players what? That you should stomp on the throats of those who are not as talented, athletic or privileged. New Trier either doesn't care about those moments where they can use the soccer field to teach some of life's most important lessons, or likes the idea of taking advantage of new programs in the interest of getting their players some stats. Again - it is hard to say. I'd like to hear what Craig has to say about it." I have asked New Trier to provide comment.
Maybe this will help. It is from the San Andreas Youth Soccer Association.

Ok well thank you for all the people that understood that scoring 11 like loyola did and 17 really isn't that much different. Its not like we set the record, so obviously teams have sunk lower that NT crystal reputation. If the team is that bad tmo, we are going to go for the record. If your that bad at soccer don't make a team. No one is going to go home from the Chicago Academy team and committ suicide cause they lost 17-0 apposed to 11-0.
So in turn, what is the big deal. Trost on that comment about our tragic poor results, maybe this state championship game stay around to actually the statistics right. Wrong guy scored the goal. It okay though buddy, when you tell me your crudentials on how your able to judge who isnt a good soccer player and who is. Probably the college coaches that our giving us offers. Prolly would disagree in your decision making mainly due to the fact that they arent going D1. So its okay, call me any time you have my number from Pepsi Showdown Board.
WOW "new trier beast" your comments really showed a true mastery of the english language. Are you a NT grad? Did your coach do your english for you because you were such a great goal scorer?
Coaches should be responsible and should have an understanding of the greater picture...Sure a kid is not going to kill himself if his team loses 17-0, but he might not come out for the team next year, and that is not good for the kid or the program. IN THE CITY SPORTS KEEP KIDS OFF THE STREETS AND AWAY FROM GANGS AND HOPEFULLY KEEP THE PEOPLE OF WILMETTE FROM BEING ROBBED.
17-0 victories are disheartening and detrimental to developing programs. Coaches should teach their kids about humility and sportsmanship...MAYBE COACH FAIRBAIRN SHOULD TALK TO COACH BURNSIDE. AT LEAST HE IS A CLASSY GUY
Joe, I'm surprised by your comments .
How exactly would you as a coach prevent a 17-0 score ???? I obviously wasnt at the game , so I can't vouch how hard the NT players went at it, but as I stated earlier , it is just as humiliating to play keep away as it is to thump in 17 goals . It is not the coaches , nor the players that are at fault . It's the system .
I agree that in high school sports , there is a little more emphasis on "life lessons" , but rather than hearing Coach Fairbairn's comments , I would rather hear from the CPA coach to see what his views are.
This sport of ours has 150 years of history and over that period it has worked most of the bugs out . Problems occur when "we" change the rules or the structure of the sport .
Very weak teams were never meant to play very strong teams ,only in special circumstances . Would this have happened in football ??? Hell no !!!!! So why here
If you look at the layout of that Super Sectional it doesnt take a rocket scientist to restructure it where everyone gets to play but the stronger teams enter the bracket later . I'm not a fan of "everyone gets to play" but it seems that is the way we live these days .
Soccer is a great leveller , and I'm sure that NT will have to work just that little bit harder to win it's games from this point forward .............and that's the way it should be.
The system being the problem does not give the coach the right to let his players go out and pound some poor team. The coach should do what ever he has to do to keep from demmoralizing his opponent, and then turn his/her efforts towards changing the system...It's not "take no prisoners" along the way...these are high school kids. Some high schools (NSCD) even have a manditory participation requirement...those kids may not even want to play in the first place. Imagine their level of enthusiasm after being crushed 17-0. Also, just wondering whether coach Fairbairn's team scored 17 goals in the first 5 minutes and then played possession soccer for the rest of the game.
As a coach what do you do? Tell your kids to lower their momentum because the team on the other side isn't as good ERRRR does't belong on the field? play a good game of keep away, or maybe let them score a few? Listen losers!!! If you are thinking of winning the State Championship, then any winning coach would NOT have pulled back the horses. You don't think the NT coach wasn't as embarrassed as the other coach. After the 5th goal you don't think he knew what kind of bad publicity he was going to get from this? He did the right thing and subbed in the benchers. And what about if you were the kid coming off the bench? This might be your only playing time and you are told to play keep away? Are you kiddin? ANY OF YOU THAT WOULD HAVE PULLED THE PLUG AND LET UP ARE LOSERS!!!!! THAT'S WHY YOUR WRITING ON THIS BLOG, COACHING A U-5 TEAM, AND JEALOUS OF A COACH WHO KNOWS WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN. YOU NEVER EVER LET UP YOU NEVER GIVE UP!!! Sometimes you have to stomp them, sometimes you get stomped. That's life's lessons!
The other coach should of had some brass ones and forfeited knowing they were not of the same caliber. And so should every other 100th seeded team in the league. Then they should have petition to get rid of the "EVERYONE MAKES IT" theory. This didn't do anyone any good especially New Trier. The coach now has to fight to keep his boys focused on the next game and not on you bunch of idiots condemning them. GROW UP AND FACE IT THAT NOT EVERYONE IS EQUAL!!!!!
AND I'M SORRY YOU GOT STOMPED AS A KID BUT GET OVER IT!! YOUR A LOSER!
RU Kiddin - It sounds like somebody stomped on you at one time and you never got over it. Like it or not, this is high school sports and the arrogance you are displaying is exactly what adolescents don't need to be learning. Losers are those who chose to embarrass others at the expense of their own interests. It appears that life needs to treat you to some of those same "lessons" that you speak of.
