I’ve always had a lot of respect for Barrington coach Scott Steib. He’s a good guy, who cares about his kids, isn’t afraid to speak up like many and is fair. He plays the game still, coaches and officiates. How many coaches can say that?
Like a number of coaches, I’ve rubbed Steib the wrong way at times with what I've written. But at the end of the day, I’ve always believed our respect for one another would see through those disagreements. And to this point, I think that’s held true.
Steib and I talked this morning and he noted that I didn’t have anyone from his area listed in my Player of the Year blog (http://blogs.suntimes.com/cornerkicks/2007/10/2007_boys_soccer_player_of_the.html#more).
He was correct, I didn’t.
I also didn’t have anyone listed from the northern suburbs or the city or the western suburbs. I noted that.
Steib wasn’t taking a shot at me - at least I didn’t take it that way. But he was fighting for his area again. I’ve always said, I have so much respect for coaches when they not only fight for their kids – but other kids in their area, too.
At the end of the day, it’s about the kids. If it weren’t, I wouldn’t be writing and Steib wouldn’t be coaching.
Now with that said, that’s the reason why these blogs have become such a hit with coaches, parents, players and readers in general. You can tell me who you think deserves to be nominated for the 2007 Sun-Times Player of the Year.
There are a ton of good players. Take a second to nominate them. Give them their due.
That's why these blogs are here.

Steib let this one get away. Loyola's stopper/center midfielder Dave Cushwa is from Barrington. Big (6'2", 185), strong, fast, absolutely owns the center of the field. Captain and three year starter, he has led Loyola to the top of the Catholic League, and a 12-2-1 record.
Lets not forget that Scott likes his name in the paper too!
Barrington is solid this year... a lot of it is coaching and the way he runs his program which I believe rally develops pride for their soccer program.
Shane Owens leads St. Viator's attack from the middle, but doesn't get the press that some of his teammates get. Fast and smart, he's another guy from Barrington that has succeeded elsewhere.
