Everyone is talking about New Trier today

It's official - New Trier beat Chicago Academy 17-0 in the Class AA regional semifinals last night.

And with that, my phone has been ringing off the hook and emails have been coming in asking if the result was a typo? I have not received a single phone call or email of support from a coach for the New Trier coaching staff.

First thoughts from area coaches and fans:

1. Craig Fairbairn - come on, what are you thinking letting your kids and program do that?

2. Why doesn't the IHSA have a mercy rule for the state playoffs? Probably because they don't have someone in the IHSA offices that has previous soccer playing or major coaching experience. If you aren't around the sport everyday and haven't played or coached the sport...it's kind of hard to understand the difference between a 10-0 to 17-0 victory.

3. Is it really New Trier's fault? Why should they stop playing? If the bench played and restrictions were placed on the players, what else is New Trier supposed to do - just stand there?

4. Why does every soccer team make the postseason? It's called money for the IHSA.

5. Why did the New Trier athletic department allow someone to report the score? And why not just report the score 10-0 or 5-0?

6. The No. 6 is important. New Trier now stands No. 6 on the IHSA all-time list for goals scored in a game (list is below). But the key number is No. 1 as one coach said. New Trier is now the No. 1 team a lot of people are going to cheer against in the postseason, because of this score.

Not since 1994 has a team in Illinois scored as many goals as New Trier did Wednesday night.

I was at the New Trier game and felt embarrassed for the overmatched Chgo Academy team. NT put in its bench after 10 to 12 minutes of play. The scoring continued. The 2nd half was cut to 20 minutes. A field player went in as keeper and every player was playing out of position. NT felt it would be more insulting to just spend the 2nd half playing keep away rather than soccer.
Why blame NT when the IHSA puts every team into the playoffs? It would be fairer to have a mercy rule for the tournament to eliminate this type of result.

There is an unwritten rule in sports...NEVER EMBARRASS YOUR OPPONENT. NT's coach missed an opportunity to teach his team a lasting lesson, not only in sportsmanship, but in life as well.

I left after 7 1/2 minutes and a 5-0 score. It wasn't a game. Don't blame the coaches, they have a hard time finding their way home at night. Tonight was a better game but at 6-0 New Trier played keep away.

From what I'm reading here and on the (other paper's) message board , it seems to me that the CA team just flat laid down . I think the NT coach did just about all he could to minimize the carnage , but I'm interested to hear all you NT critics out there tell us what else that could have been done .

Short of dressing the mom's and putting them out there with grandma in goals , I'm not sure any other options were available

I feel more of the responsibility lies with the CA coach , or teacher , or whoever was there . NT couldn't call the game at the risk of forfeit , so the other coach should have done it .

But again , it's not the players , it's the dumbass system . These teams should never have been playing each other.

Ok... everyone is giving Mr. Trost a hard time. The fact is he brings more publicity to the underated game of Illinois High School Soccer. It is thanks to him we can look forward to some of the top High School Soccer Games of the year in the Pepsi Showdown. Though we may wish he wrote a little more about our team or we may disagree with his rankings. The fact is he is one man doing all he can to get high school soccer in the newspapers in a society that is love with football. IHSA devotes so much time to football especially on its website. Mr. Trost & other Newspaper columnists provide us with information that we can get no where else. Soccer still does not have the respect it deserves in the High School Community. Mr. Trost is trying to change that. So if you disagree with him, thats fine. But talk about what you disagree with instead of bashing him or his knowledge cause frankly he doesn't deserve it.

(sorry for spelling & grammar errors)

where can i get a video of this?
