Kosovare Asllani netted her first goal and the Red Stars knocked off first-place FC Gold Pride, 1-0 last night in Women's Professional Soccer before 3,845 at Toyota Park.
The Red Stars (2-4-1) got on the board in the 55th minute when Asllani converted a Marian Dalmy pass that gave the Red Stars their first lead at home this season, put an end to a five-half scoreless drought. And the defense was able to hold off Gold Pride stars Marta and Christine Sinclair. Gold Pride fell to 5-2.
Red Stars goalkeeper Jillian Loyden made two saves en route to her second shutout of the season.
In a release, Red Stars General Manager Marcia McDermott said, "I just think the team really came out tonight and competed well together, and that was one of the primary goals they had. And you can look at the great goal Kosa [Kosovare Asllani] scored coming through with excellent timing created by Marian Dalmy. I think it was just a really good, comprehensive team effort tonight.
Added Asllani, "I was proud of the team and how we worked with each other, and the only word I can come up with in my head is 'teamwork.' I'm so proud tonight and I feel like it wasn't just my goal, it was the team's goal. Everybody had a real big part in this."
Next up for the Red Stars is a 5 p.m. match next Sunday against the Atlanta Beat at Toyota Park. That game will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel.
