Turkey of the Week: College friends

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

College friends Mike Lahey (right) and Kyle Demus (left) hunt turkey each spring in Winnebago County near the state line.

They spotted birds after the morning fly down. With the help of Kyle's father Dan Demus, they positioned themselves 400 yards below the birds on a tree line. Kyle and Mike belly-crawled 300 yards to set up a clear shot.

``The rest is history,'' emailed Lahey, a graduate student in environmental sciences at Ohio State. ``This hunt could not have come to the successful conclusion that it did without the generosity of the Demus family.''

Lahey bagged a 25-pound tom with a 9 ½ inch beard and 1 1/4 inch spurs.

Around turkey season, I run TOTW on the Sun-Times outdoors page. Email nominations to
