WWW Chicago outdoors: Perch, bass, collectibles & more water

There's a spring feel, finally, to this Wild Weekend Wandering around Chicago outdoors.

And it is just a packed stretch for me, continuing what has been a packed stretch for the past two weeks.

Today, I am covering the IHSA bass fishing sectional at Braidwood Lake. Well, it was originally scheduled to be the first out of Des Plaines Conservation Area but was moved to Braidwood because of the flooding.

Saturday, I tried to keep open for family stuff. Considering the forecast, I suspect the two youngest kids will want to fish. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I should visit the National Antique Decoy & Sporting Collectibles Show at Pheasant Run in St. Charles, either tonight after Braidwood or tomorrow. But I don't see a viable window.

On Sunday, I am scheduled to do a flyover of the Illinois River with Barbara Johnson and some Ducks Unlimited sorts to look at the flood and duck clubs. I think we are still on.

Then, early Monday, I am taking Bobby Bergren up on an offer to chase perch at Gary Light. And I think we might mix in some smallmouth fishing, too. Weather looks perfect and the jumbo perch have been cooperating big time.

Saturday is one of those busy days for other things I should do. The Hofmann Dam River Rats Des Plaines River clean up is scheduled for for 9 a.m. to noon at the east side of the Barrypoint Road Bridge.

As far as I know, it is still on. Lord knows, considering what the Des Plaines did the past week and is still doing, there's clean up to do.

Because of the water last weekend, Lakeside extended it Mega Big Fish Contest Weekend to include this weekend. It includes nearly all species and it should be a breakout weekend for fishing there.

Alert to myself. At least I know where I want to deer hunt next fall, so I need to get my application in for deer season. The first lottery period application period runs through Tuesday for Illinois residents for firearm and muzzleloader-only deer seasons. Click here or go to the Online Services tab at
