Illinois hunting: Youth turkey hunt, second best

Youth hunters came up well short of the record harvest of turkeys in the youth seasons last spring, but they bagged the second highest total on record for the youth seasons this spring.

Here's the world from the IDNR:

Illinois Youth Wild Turkey Harvest is Second Best on Record

SPRINGFIELD, IL - The Illinois youth wild turkey season again provided an excellent opportunity for young hunters to spend time outdoors with a mentor, and 923 birds were harvested during the 2013 youth season. The season dates were March 30th and 31st for the south zone and April 6th and 7th for the north zone. The record for the youth season was set last year with 1300 wild turkeys harvested. This year 4,468 youth turkey permits were issued, including 112 for special hunt areas. This compares with 4,100 last year including 131 for special hunt areas.

"Good weather for much of the season certainly helped, and we are hopeful that the better year for turkey reproduction last year was also a factor," said Paul Brewer, Illinois Wild Turkey Project Manager. "The spring of 2012 was the first dry one we had in many years, after cold and wet springs in previous years had suppressed survival of young turkeys. An early hatch also helped turkey broods make it through the stress of summer drought in good shape."
