Fish of the Week: Freak trout in Cook County.

There's the normal rainbow trout stocked for spring fishing in Illinois. Then there's what Richard Gryniewski of Mount Prospect pulled out of Axehead Lake Saturday on opening day for spring trout.


``Those two were the biggest forest preserve trout I have ever seen,'' Jason Fox emailed.

When asked, Jim Phillips, veteran fisheries biologist for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, said, ``Cool, they might have been carry-overs [from the fall stocking].''

He said the spring stocking was of the usual half to three-quarter pound rainbows.

Fox said they were fishing ultralight gear with PowerBait on the bottom and limited out in under an hour.

I believe that is a first: stocked trout for FOTW.
