Jim Jansky caught and released his personal best northern pike Sunday while ice fishing at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville. The 40-inch pike surpassed the 38-incher he caught in 2011 for FOTW.
He was using 25-pound line with a 12-pound fluorocarbon leader and a 5-inch golden roach on a 1/0 wide-gap finesse hook.
``I was fishing in a open patch of weeds, five feet down, and had to find this spot because of the water being three feet down from normal,'' emailed the facilities manager at Waubonsie High School.
