Let's extend the definition of showtime for Wild Weekend Wandering around Chicago outdoors.

Forgive me, I am a bit behind getting this up while I tried to catch up on some other work, and need to plow through.

ICE EVENTS: If you want pro advice and tips on ice fishing, by God, this is your weekend on many counts, including weather that is too lousy to really enjoy but not lousy enough to bring on ice fishing.

Cabela's in Hoffman Estates and Hammond holds its Ice Fishing Classic this weekend.

Jim ``The Crappie Professor'' Kopjo gives a free ice fishing seminar 10 a.m.-noon Saturday for Lakeside at Shabbona Lake.

The Bass Pro Shops Ice Fishing Event is this weekend in Gurnee, Bolingbrook and Portage, Ind. Click here.

SHOWTIME: The Wisconsin Ice Fishing Show is this weekend at The Patriot Center in Rothschild, Wis.

ILLINOIS MUZZLELOADER-ONLY DEER HUNTING: Muzzleloader-only season opened today and runs through Sunday. There were still some permits available.

PERCH FISHING: Shore fishing is rebuilding, especially at Diversey Harbor and Navy Pier; and somewhat at Montrose Harbor. Boat fishing, which had been unbelievable up until Tuesday in Indiana, was set back by the weather change. But shore fishermen are catching some serious jumbos at the Hole-in-the-Wall.

WATERFOWLNG: Might finally have a weekend for duck hunting.

WATCHING SANDHILL CRANES: Peak of sandhills has been reached, but there were still 21,133 counted on Tuesday at Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area, southeast of Valparaiso, Ind. The best times to view them and fully grasp the wonder of them is near dawn or dusk. The next week or so should be peak. I realize this is a trek, so take some time to explore Valparaiso, just a wonderful town, or do a leisurely drive on back roads through the Indiana countryside.

ICE FISHING: Next week. The few days of ice fishing in northern Wisconsin last weekend disappeared with the rain and warmth. Should be back next week.

CRAPPIE FISHING: With this weather, more than just the hard-core guys will be out crappie fishing on local ponds and lakes. Lots of good reports.

INDIANA STREAMS: We can really use the rain if fresh winter steelhead are to come in.

Click here for the Indiana DNR's map of Trail Creek access.

UPLAND HUNTING: Hunting for pheasants, rabbits, quail and gray partridge is underway.

ARCHERY: Archery Bow Range Chicago offers instruction.

BUCK OF THE WEEK: Buck of the Week, the celebration of big bucks taken around Chicago outdoors, runs Wednesdays on the Sun-Times outdoors page. Send nominations to

CHICAGO PIER PASSES: Considering the arrival of the perch bite, now is a good time for a reminder that the $6 pier passes for Chicago harbors, except 31st, are available now at Henry's Sports and Bait, 3130 S. Canal.

PERSONAL PICKS: Next week, I hope to do the perch fishing from shore in Chicago. . . . If snow comes, I may try to get out for rabbit hunting. . . . We will have a family hike. . . . On the radio front, I need to get some holiday shows piled up for my Outside radio show on WKCC-FM (91.1). I am enjoying pulling shows together.
