Estaban Uriostigue worked to arrow ``The Bull,'' one of the great bucks of the fall, in eastern Kankakee County.
Ovidijus ``Ovi'' Burbulis caught a muskie so big Sunday that guide Jim Templin considered calling the Illinois DNR to check for a possible state record, before they released it.
The DNR Sustainability Bill--Senate Bill 1566--passed today; now the work begins to make it more than a band-aid; but, all in all, this is a great day.

It's that time of year: a slight chance of some ice fishing in northern Wisconsin later this week, a hope that better weather rebuilds the southern Lake Michigan perch fishing for the weekend and some wackiness among river fishermen lead this Midwest Fishing Report.

I had expected a major push of ducks over the weekend, but reports from the public sites in northeast Illinois certainly don't indicate that; so a reminder on turkey permits and the upcoming second firearm deer season lead this Illinois Hunting Report along .

Looks like a weekend going from mild to a hint of winter for this Midwest Fishing Report, but at least there are beginning reports of perch around southern Lake Michigan.
As expected, the first firearm season was a strong one for Illinois deer hunters.
The second firearm season will come soon enough, well next week, but deer still are the lead for this Illinois Hunting Report; although it might be worthwhile for waterfowlers to watch the skies as the front drops through Friday.

A couple weeks ago, district fisheries biologist Frank Jakubicek dropped a note of concern about the possibility of winter fish kills because of lingering impacts from the Drought of 2012.

On one hand, hints come and go to our north of first ice, while on the other, the forecast looks like 10 days of fairly stable weather and gives hope for some late perch fishing on southern Lake Michigan for this Midwest Fishing Report.

By the looks of the harvest report in the past week,
rut is building quickly for Illinois hunters, leading to a higher than normal harvest so far.
I strongly urge watching the debut of ``Everglades of the North: The Story of the Grand Kankakee Marsh'' at 8 p.m. today on WYIN, the presenting public television station in Merrilleville, Ind.
