High school bass fishing: Brother Rice tops at Rayjus Outdoors-Oak Lawn

Brother Rice went took first and third at the biggest high school bass fishing tournament, outside of the state tournament, Saturday at Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area.


Jim Ciurej and Matt Caulfield, in a boat captained by Joe Zehner, caught their limit of five by 10 a.m. to win the Rayjus Outdoors - Oak Lawn High School Bass Tournament with 7.43 pounds, anchored by a 2.5-pound largemouth.

The Brother Rice seniors were fishing ``deeper weed edges'' on the Des Plaines River.

Geneva's Sam Vogelsberg and Matt D'Onofrio, in a boat captained by Sam's Dad Mark, went shallow on the Des Plaines and took second with four weighing 6.02, anchored by a 2.16.


Brother Rice boat No. 1 was third with 5.9 pounds.

The field included 45 boats of which 21 weighed fish on a bit of tough bite day and one with a steady rain at the end.
