Fish of the Week: Big Kankakee walleye

One major note of fishing this mild winter has been good walleye catches from area rivers, typified by the 10.5-pound walleye Dan Davis caught from the Kankakee River.

The Manteno man was fishing a green No. 7 Rapala on Feb. 8 just after dark around Kankakee. Davis caught double-digit walleyes, most released, this winter from the Kankakee, according to Robert Themer of the Daily Journal.

Kankakee guru Ed Mullady called it the ``catch of the year for Kankakee River walleye.''

The Kankakee is not alone in good catches of walleye this winter. I think the mild winter contributed, but many rivers gave up good walleye over the past couple months.

Once again, I am trying to catch up on posting FOTW, which appears Wednesdays in the Sun-Times outdoors page on Wednesdays.
