Fish of the Week: Crappie on ice

Catching up on FOTW, here with Ed Potocki from last Wednesday.


He showed muskie hunters can ice fish, too. On Jan. 28, he caught the crappie above at a derby for veterans on Bangs Lake in Wauconda.

``Not much action all morning on grubs and waxies in six to nine feet, so I headed for deeper water,'' he emailed. ``I switched to a Genz Bug [glow in the dark white] and put on Berkley Gulp! Alive! pink waxies. About five minutes later, jigging in 16 feet, the 14-inch crappie hit 12 inches off the bottom. 11:30 a.m. So much for the crappie bite after dark?''

With ice fishing in such short supply this winter, I am just glad to squeeze in an ice-fishing FOTW.
