Illinois deer hunting: Muzzleloader & archery update

Muzzleloader totals for deer were up, while the harvest by bowhunters is lagging behind 2010.

Here is the word from Paul Shelton, forest wildlife program manager. the county breakdowns are below his overview.

PRELIMINARY MUZZLELOADER SEASON HARVEST

During the muzzleloading rifle deer season (December 9-11, 2011), Illinois hunters harvested a preliminary total of 4,827 deer, compared to 3,328 in 2010. Harvest sex ratios were 58% female to 42% male. Top five counties were Pike (285), Fulton (143), Hancock (123), Jefferson (114), and Randolph (108). The record muzzleloader season harvest occurred in 2006, with 5,973 deer taken. A table of county harvest results is attached, with last year's final figures for comparison.

PRELIMINARY ARCHERY HARVEST UPDATE

Through December 11, Illinois archery deer hunters have harvested 55,188 deer, compared to 57,398 during the same period last year. Cumulative sex ratios in the deer harvest to date have been 49.4% females to 50.6% males, but recent harvest has been more heavily weighted toward female deer. Since the beginning of December, females have comprised 55% of deer taken.

Top five counties currently are Pike (2656), Fulton (1642), Adams (1238), Jefferson (1234), and Peoria (1090). A table of archery harvest results by county is attached. The archery season continues through January 15, 2012.
