Illinois Hunting Report: 100-year-old hunter question

I did a story on a 100-year-old hunter in northern Indiana, and it made me wonder if anybody knows of a hunter that old in Illinois, a question for a week when waiting and prepping leads the Illinois Hunting Report.

What I mean by waiting is a lot of hunters are waiting for the scene above, a view from the deer stand, with archery season opening on Oct. 1. The photo above happens to be opening day of firearm season from my deer stand last year.

BTW, if you happen to know a 100-year-old Illinois hunter, drop me a note at

As of Sunday, according to the Illinois Crop Progress and Condition Report, corn harvest was at 11 percent statewide, but was holding at 1 percent in the northeast and was only 4 percent in the northwest.

The opening of archery hunting for deer is less than two weeks away.

During the hunting seasons, the extended online version of the IHR, which appears most weeks during the hunting season in the outdoors page of the Sun-Times on Wednesdays, is usually posted here on Tuesdays. I am late today.

If you have suggestions, e-mail me at or post in the comments.

The wait and practicing is on in full force for the opening of archery deer season on Oct. 1. . . . I am still considering running trail cam photos as a sort of prelude or kick off for BOTW, the celebration of big bucks bagged by hunters. Usually I don't start running BOTW until about the time of the rut, but I may reconsider that this year.

BOTW runs Wednesdays around the hunting seasons and BOTW: Unplugged, the weekly celebration of live big bucks around Chicago outdoors, on Sundays much of the year on the outdoors page in the Sun-Times. E-mail nominations for either one to
