So a reader asked a question about some birds while he was working in the suburbs.

The good fall run of salmon around southern Lake Michigan goes on, but there are signs of the darkening end for the salmon run, that leads this lakes/areas section of the Midwest Fishing Report.

Some of our rivers kicked up a little with the persistent rains, but most only rose enough to really start the good fall fishing; that leads this rivers section of the Midwest Fishing Report.

I saw my first harvested cornfield Saturday, between Dwight and Morris; that is the one bit of news that benefits the big news for the this Illinois Hunting Report: Bow season opens Saturday for deer.

The first hints of color change started about a week and a half ago, and they were just hints if you paid attention to the undergrowth.

Chris Young has done a good job in the State Journal-Register of following the case against Jeff Foiles, waterfowling video star; and I highly recommend reading Young's account of Foiles' sentencing yesterday.

Shoreline salmon on southern Lake Michigan are the story of the fall and lead this lakes/areas section of the Midwest Fishing Report, but cooling waters have fishermen thinking muskies, too.

Norm Minas, the great Kankakee wader/fisherman, threw this in at the end of his report, ``I've noticed leaves on trees starting to change colors.'' Change comes for this rivers section of the Midwest Fishing Report.

I did a story on a 100-year-old hunter in northern Indiana, and it made me wonder if anybody knows of a hunter that old in Illinois, a question for a week when waiting and prepping leads the Illinois Hunting Report.

It was a beautiful night Sunday for the eighth Salmon Classic at Northerly island, well, other than being rainy or showery.

We pack a bunch of firsts into "Outside" this afternoon when Jeff Manes, Patty Wisniewski and Brian Kallies, producers of "Everglades of the North: The Grand Kankakee Marsh," explain their imposing project about the Kankakee basin.

Believe it or not, considering our wet spring and summer, are heading toward extreme fall lowness on the rivers near Chicago, but the fall feeding frenzy is about to begin as we prepare this rivers section of the Midwest Fishing Report. (Just added Des Plaines report)

Rain and all Friday morning, I had a blast drift fishing on the Kankakee River.

A home engagement of the Chicago Carp Classic leads this Wild Weekend Wandering around Chicago outdoors, but there's plenty of other options from wading/fishing to squirrel hunting to hearing about zander in Russia.

Salmon coming in, despite the winds and waves on Lake Michigan, lead this areas and lakes section of the Midwest Fishing Report.

Wading rivers is my pick for the week for this rivers section of the Midwest Fishing Report, good enough that one faithful contributor swooned into his favorite Dead tune ("Ripple") at the end a day.

All I know is that Thursday is the hottest day I have ever hunted in more than 40 years of hunting, all the same hunting began in earnest last week in Illinois and that leads this Illinois Hunting Report.

On Sunday, I wrote about how I was stunned by the reasonng to push for a small piece of Iroquois SWA--the 77 acres of the Leesville East Savanna--to be dedicated as a nature preserve.

In part two of his first major extended appearance on radio, Mike Conlin takes on some of the political and structural problems, including funding, related to the IDNR today on "Outside."
