Fishing for zander and pike in Russia and perch fishing on the Chicago lakefront leads this Wild Weekend Wandering around Chicago outdoors.
We'll get to perch fishing on the lakefront, the scene above was at 39th on opening morning Monday, but let's wander to Russia first.
RUSSIAN PIKE AND ZANDER: Got your attention, huh? I think Mike Pehanich is one of the best Chicago-area outdoors writers. Frankly, I have been surprised twice now that the big fluffy newspaper in town didn't try to hire him. He will talk about his fishing for pike and zander (a perch and walleye relative) in Russia at the Chicagoland Muskie Hunters chapter of Muskies Inc. meeting on Tuesday. It is at 7:30 p.m. at the Park Ridge VFW. Contact Dean Rosset at (847) 677-0017 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
LAKEFRONT PERCH: With the wind shift Tuesday night, action became more variable, but there are plenty of perch to be caught from shore and boat. Just about anything is working. The one constant seems to be that soft shells make a difference in catching jumbos. For boats, the hot spot has been in the weed beds off Navy Pier. There are still some decent catches in Indiana by ``The Ditch.'' I just the perch fishing holds.
WADING: There are multiple options for wading local rivers this weekend. I would hope to do the Kankakee, but that might have to wait until next week. There's a chance a wild man in Indiana might convince to wander around the Yellow or Tippecanoe rivers.
NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION: There's a couple good banquets this week, stretching the definition of Wild Weekend Wandering. On Wednesday, the Southwest Suburban Strutters hold theirs at Crystal Sky Banquet Hall in McCook. Contact Walter Dudek at email@example.com. . . . On Friday, the Windy City Longbeards hold theirs at Erie Street Cafe in downtown Chicago. Contact Matthew Dunn at (773) 294-6851.
DUCKS UNLIMITED: Again, stretching the definition of Wild Weekend Wandering, on Thursday, the 30th annual Downtown Chicago DU dinner banquet is at the Union League Club in Chicago. Contact at John Schreiner at firstname.lastname@example.org or Conor Mullady at email@example.com.
HUNTING CLASSIC: Bass Pro Shops hold their 2011 Fall Hunting Classic, beginning today and running through Aug. 21.
DALEY DERBY: In August, the species for the Richard J. Daley Sportfishing Derby are carp, catfish, panfish, steelhead and chinook. Register fish at Henry's Sports & Bait, Park Bait or Vet's Bait. Go to henryssports.com or call (312) 225-8538.
ILLINOIS HUNTING: The big thing is squirrel hunting opened on Monday. Regs are the same.
ILLINOIS PERMITS: Online permit reservations for controlled pheasant hunting continue. Go to dnr.illinois.gov, click ``Upland Game'', then ``Controlled Pheasant Areas'' . . . Applications begin for free upland game hunts and continue until Aug. 31.
ARCHERY: Archery Bow Range Chicago offers instruction.
PERSONAL PICKS: On the technical side, I need to consult with a couple buddies, then apply for the free upland game permit, what I think is the coolest hunting program in Illinois. . . . On Saturday, I hope to be there when one of the great fighters for Chicago shore fishing is given an honor. . . . I hope to sneak in my morning of squirrel hunting. . . . We will do a family hike, just not sure where. . . . I am tempted to try to sneak in some time for smallmouth on the Chicago lakefront after watching the cruisers pass while perch fishing on Monday. . . . Work continues on an ongoing writing project. . . . As always, a fair amount of my spare time is spent working on ``Outside,'' the radio show Joel Greenberg and I are doing at 4:30 p.m. Mondays on WKCC-FM (91.1).
