WWW Chicago outdoors: Shooting sports to perch

It's a good packed Wild Weekend Wandering around Chicago outdoors: lakefront perch fishing to shooting in Mokena to celebrating urban wilds at Beaubien Woods, and beyond.

The Frankfort Sportsman Club in Mokena holds an open house on 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, in part to show off its newly remodeled and challenging 5-stand course. I think this just uploaded video is of it. One of the members told me it is quite the challenging stand. Call (815) 469-9887.

LAKEFRONT PERCH: Perch started coming in on the Chicago lakefront. Is it for real or just a tease? This should be the weekend to find out. It's still a minnow bite.

BEAUBIEN WOODS CELEBRATION: URBAN WILDS: On Saturday, the Beaubien Woods Celebration and Environmental Day! has fishing, environmental learning and games from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Fishin' Buddies, Inc. sponsors it in conjunction with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, The Field Museum, Greencorps Chicago, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Eden Place. It's free, but preregister at enviroday.eventbrite.com.

KANKAKEE FUTURE: John Marlin and Nani Bhowmik are keynote speakers at the ``WaterWorks'' conference on the state of the Kankakee River at Kankakee's Hilton Garden Inn from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday. Click here or call (815) 935-1177.

LAKEFRONT SMALLMOUTH: Maybe it is just hopefulness on my part, but this should finally be the weekend for smallmouth action on the Chicago shoreline to pick up as the water finally clears.

CABIN FESTIVAL: Goose Lake Prairie SNA near Morris hosts a cabin festival from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Click here.

MAZONIA FISHING: Still would be my top pick for multiple species fishing in an idyllic setting.

PADDLING: In June, Chicago River Canoe & Kayak begins four-week Cardio Kayak Classes at its Chicago launch on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. It's $80 for first-timers, $50 for returnees. E-mail info@chicagoriverpaddle.com or call (773) 704-2663.

HEIDECKE FISHING: Would probably be my second choice for multiple species fishing: hybrid stripers, muskie, walleye and the surprise of crappie.

FREE FISHING WEEKEND: Indiana (for Hoosiers only) and Wisconsin have their free fishing weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

PARKS OPEN HOUSE: On Sunday, Wisconsin holds its State Park Open House with free entrance to state parks, forests, trails and recreation areas.

FREE FLY FISHING: Orvis offers free clinics for fly fishers on weekends through July. Click here. After completing the 2 1/2-hour class, students receive coupons and free membership to Trout Unlimited. And the Chicago Orvis has Joseph Meyer, the area's great fly fishing teacher.

ILLINOIS PERMITS: Residents may apply for fall shotgun turkey permits through July 12. Click here.

ILLINOIS HUNTING: Hunting and trapping for woodchucks opened this month.

DALEY DERBY: The Richard J. Daley Sportfishing Derby is open. In June, the species are carp, catfish, perch, coho and chinook. Register fish at Henry's Sports & Bait, Park Bait or Vet's Bait. Go to henryssports.com or call (312) 225-8538.

ARCHERY: Archery Bow Range Chicago offers instruction.

WORLD-WIDE LIVING: The Nature Conservancy's Design for a Living World Exhibition is at The Field Museum through November 13. Click here for details.

LIVING WORLD PHOTO ESSAY: TNC also said we ``enjoy the complementary Design for a Living World Photo Essay at the Lurie Garden in Millennium Park now through November 13.'' It showcases various TNC project from around the world, including in Illinois. Click here for details.

FISH HOTEL: The Fish Hotel, a floating aquatic habitat, is back on the Chicago Riverwalk at Dearborn. I need to get my kids down to see that thing.

PERSONAL PICKS: Don't know what I am doing yet. I do know the kids have two graduation parties rolled into one tonight with the gift of going to the Jamboree at the Midwest Bank Amphitheater. And I am old enough to call it The World and get blank stares from the kids. So there's running to do on both ends. . . . I would like to see the Beaubien Woods Celebration and Environmental Day! on Saturday. . . . I need to fit in both perch and smallmouth on the Chicago lakefront in the next week. Not sure how yet. . . . I hope to get my daughter out for her first try at frog fishing for bass. We will see. . . . As always, a fair amount of my spare time is spent working on ``Outside,'' the radio show Joel Greenberg and I are doing at 4:30 p.m. Mondays on WKCC-FM (91.1).
