Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Palos-Gaidas Funeral Home, 11028 Southwest Highway, Palos Hills. A funeral Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Symphorosa, 6135 S. Austin Ave., in Chicago, with burial to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 6001 W. 111th St., Alsip.
The obit is a good one, but I think it could have given more on what Mr. O'Malley, 76, did as a Chicago fireman, including in the Midway air crash.
It's hard to believe that I first had contact with him when I was around 14 and in the Boy Scouts 40 years ago. I'd get reminded of that when we would run into each other. At that age we don't pay much attention to the "old guys" but it makes you wonder just how much these old guys shaped us into what we are.
The short cut to St. Syms from my parents house was walking the 100 yards down the alley to the front entrance. I think my dad will be getting out his walker to go pay his respects.
