Wild of the Week: Sparring turkeys

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

So coming around what used to be called Dead Man's Curver on Route 113 on March 5, I caught, out of the corner of my eye, two turkeys circling each other.

My first thought was, well, I might catch some live turkey porn.

They circled each other. One fanned and leaped in the air.

I had a break in traffic so I whipped into a farm lane. The turkeys were so oblivious that they didn't even notice and kept to what they were doing.

When I started taking photos, I noticed both were toms or rather, I should say, bearded birds.

There's a bit of the lull on Sundays on the outdoors page of the Sun-Times.

In the weeks between the end of Buck of the Week: Unplugged, the weekly celebration of live big bucks around Chicago outdoors, and the beginning of Morel of the Week or Mushroom of the Week, there is some space.

I would like to fill those Sundays with Wild of the Week photos.

My turkeys are an example.

I would note that MOTW is not far away. Last week, Jason Johns at Todd Gessner Outdoors said he thought it would be an outstanding spring soon for morels in southern Illinois.

Soon. Very soon.

E-mail nominations for any of those weekly photo celebrations to
