WWW Chicago outdoors: Ice & snow, just go

Find some excuse to revel in the snow--it's coming--and why not lead with that for this Wild Weekend Wandering around Chicago outdoors.

SNOW PLAY: Why not? Find a hill to take your kids sledding on. I just checked our saucers and sleds. . . . If I had the time, I would even think about cross-country skiing. . . . But mainly just play and enjoy.

DEER HUNTING: The second firearm season for Illinois deer hunting runs through Sunday. For many of us, it will be picture perfect with the snow. Where I hunt had a nice coating already on Thursday. It should be a good weekend of hunting.

ICE FISHING: A few tried the back channels on the Chain today, according to Greg Dickson at Triangle. I stress a few. . . . . Hermann's sent an update and said the ice at Nielsen's Channel on the Fox River at Port Barrington was not safe with only about an inch. . . . Snow could knock ice formation back if too much accumulates. . . . Better ice fishing options are in northern Wisconsin.

PERCH FISHING: This is getting to be the mantra--``It takes lots of sorting''--but that is usual for winter perch fishing for the favorite of Chicago fishing. Navy Pier remains the best spot for keepers. But there's been action at Montrose and Burnham/Northerly Island, too.

CRANE WATCHING: This is the highest concentration of sandhill cranes at Jasper-Pulaski FWA southeast of Valparaiso, Ind. so far this fall. Tuesday's count was 16,822. I have no idea if a good snowfall will help or hurt viewing them. My instincts say it should be a more spectacular experience. I repeat, an evening or morning trip to see this is a must. It is one of the most impressive sights around Chicago outdoors.

LIV'S HUNT FOR A CURE: The ninth annual fundraiser is tonight and tomorrow. The hunting part is already set. However, the calling contest is at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Libertyville Sports Complex. Click here for details.

WATERFOWL HUNTING: Last weekend was the best of the year so far around here. I would expect this to be a good weekend too, maybe the weekend of the year.

ARCHERY: Archery Bow Range Chicago offers beginner courses and much more regularly. Click here.

PERSONAL PICKS: I am focused on deer hunting this weekend. . . . Barring too much snow, I plan to catch the calling contest part of Liv's Hunt for a Cure Saturday night. . . . Otherwise, the kids and I will get in some serious snow play. . . . And I think it is the Sunday to cut our own tree, a family custom for more than a decade.
