Illinois Hunting Report: More pheasants & deer

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

It was a good year for raising penned pheasants, so there are expanded options for pheasant hunters in this Illinois Hunting Report.

That's Daisy from five years ago in warmer days working on a pheasant during controlled pheasant hunting at Iroquois County SWA.

During the hunting seasons, the extended online version of the IHR, which comes at the end of the Midwest Fishing Report in the Sun-Times on Wednesdays, is usually posted here on Tuesdays.

If you have suggestions, e-mail me at outdoordb@sbcglobal.net or post in the comments.

CONTROLLED PHEASANT HUNTING NOTE

Click here for details on expanded controlled pheasant hunting, but the basics are that controlled pheasant hunting season has been extended at Iroquois County SWA until Dec. 26 and hunter quotas have been increased at the Jim Edgar Panther SFWA.

DEER

I am curious how the weekend weather impacted harvest during muzzleloader-only season, which ended Sunday. I will post figures, when the IDNR sends them, here on Stray Casts.

The biggest buck taken in Illinois so far is a non-typical arrowed in Clark County, green-scoring in the 240s, according to Tim Walmsley, a blogger at Heartland Outdoors. Click here for a photo and a couple graphs.

Through 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, bowhunters reported a kill of 57, 549.

LATE-WINTER AND SPECIAL CWD DEER PERMITS

County permits for the 2010-11 late-winter antlerless-only firearm deer season and the special CWD deer season will be available over the counter beginning today from DNR Direct permit sale locations throughout Illinois. Season dates are Dec. 30, 2010-Jan. 2, 2011 and Jan. 14-16, 2011. Click here to find a permit sale vendor:

NORTHEAST ILLINOIS DEER NOTE

There will be standby possibilities during the late-winter season at Heidecke Lake again for Heidecke, Goose Lake Prairie and Morris Wetlands SFWA.

BUCK OF THE WEEK PHOTOS

Good nominations keep coming. BOTW will have a long run this year. BOTW runs on the outdoors page in the Sun-Times on Wednesdays. I usually post it here on Stray Casts on Tuesday.

Where there is open water, there is good to outstanding hunting.

Mazonia lakes are locked up.

Our blind at Kankakee River State Park has been iced out since Thursday. We are debating what to try.

WATERFOWLING AT EMIQUON & MERWIN

Click here for the word on waterfowling at Emiquon and Merwin preserves.

SOUTH WATERFOWL

Considering how much of northern and central parts of the state are locking up, I even heard a report of Canada geese showing up in a more traditional far southern club. It's that kind of winter.

Duck season runs through Jan. 23. The second Canada goose season and snow geese and white-fronted geese seasons run through Jan. 31.

PHEASANT/PARTRIDGE/QUAIL/RABBIT

With the snow cover, upland hunters are hitting the fields big time. More snow may be coming on Thursday.

Sounds like a decent harvest, and a buck scoring in the 240's has a lot to say about the quality of deer that Illinois is producing. Sounds promising for the future.
