WWW Chicago outdoors: Thanksgiving traditions

Time for traditions--first ice and Thanksgiving perch--in this Wild Weekend Wandering around Chicago outdoors.

PERCH FISHING: It takes lots of sorting, but perch are in. Navy Pier has been better for keepers than other spots. Wind has also limited effort at Montrose. Weather has been preventing much effort by boaters around the Indiana-Illinois stateline, too. When weather settles down, perching from boat and shore should be strong.

FIRST ICE: There's some first ice in northern Wisconsin. Make your calls, first.

CRANE WATCHING: The sandhill cranes are in at Jasper-Pulaski FWA southeast of Valparaiso, Ind. Click here for info and updates.

As many as were coming over Chicago and the suburbs earlier this week, it should be a good week.

I repeat, an evening or morning trip to see this is a must. It is one of the most impressive sights around Chicago outdoors.

WATERFOWL HUNTING: Fresh birds are arriving, and more should be coming. I expect this to be the weekend with the most effort and success so far this season.

NORTHERLY ISLAND MEETING: There's a presentation of plans for Northerly Island and an open-house at The Chicago Architecture Foundation,  224 S. Michigan Avenue, 1st Floor, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The Chicago Park District, Jeanne Gang from Studio/Gang/Architects and JJR will present.

ILLINOIS HUNTING NOTES: Hunting for woodcock ends Monday. . . . Wednesday is the deadline for spring turkey permits, first lottery.

ICF SCHOLARSHIP: Tuesday is the deadline to apply for the three Illinois Conservation Foundation Conservation Achievement Scholarships. Click here.

ARCHERY: Archery Bow Range Chicago offers beginner courses and much more regularly. Click here.

HAWK WATCH: Another year, and another year I didn't make it to the Illinois Beach State Park Hawk Watch. It ends Sunday. At least one counter/observer is there from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily (weather permitting). Click here for details.

PERSONAL PICKS: It's Thanksgiving and I'm taking a break, other than getting in a day of fishing on Table Rock on Saturday. . . . Back at it next week, when I will be deer hunting and hopefully earlier in the week getting in a taste of perch fishing at Montrose or Navy Pier. . . . This is also a week where I will be out waterfowl hunting again.
