Illinois deer hunting: Bowhunters near 50,000 deer

buck2010small Illinois bowhunters are closing in on 50,000 deer killed since the

season opened Oct. 1.

The rut is shown by the percentage of bucks being taken in the last week.

Here is the breakdown from forest wildlife program manager Paul Shelton:

Through the end of the day on Monday, 11/15/2010, archery deer harvest stands at 49,153, compared to 49,542 (2009), 45,843 (2008), and 50,472 (2007) for the same time period in previous years. Archery harvest sex ratios for the season are currently 51% female: 49% male, but harvests during the past week were generally more skewed with bucks comprising 63%-69% of the take.


Top five counties are Pike (2566), Fulton (1512), Adams (1088), Jefferson (1086), and Peoria (1005).
