IUKA, Ill.--From a Sunday fried chicken dinner at an old-time small-town restaurant to persimmon picking, I tied together some of my favorite elements of the Illinois outdoors experience today.

Click here for my column on going from eating at Penny's Cafe to persimmon picking in Marion County last Sunday, on the Sun-Times outdoors page today.
That's fried chicken, mashed taters and gravy, green beans, pickled beets and white bread at Penny's.

Debbie Williams, wife of my pastor Jim, found the first persimmon after the Sunday dinner. That's Jim in the background getting to work on the 10 gallons of persimmons we picked.
