Ray Hinton Jr. caught this symbolic Fish of the Week, a nice chinook salmon from the South Side of Chicago.
Here's the word from Ray Hinton Sr., one of best lakefront fishermen on the South Side of Chicago:
This is my Son Ray jr., he hit this 14lb 2oz male king at 63rd st. 9-2-2010 at 6 ish pm, i thought it was a female with eggs at first but it turned out to be a nice lean male, i got whipped by 9lbs so far......Dale these fish are clean and have beautiful orangest colored meat. The season is nice so far but i believe some monsters are heading our way.....have a great day.
The king Hinton Jr. caught at Casino pier by Jackson Park is symbolic of the great annual event in Chicago fishing, the return of kings to shore.
``Salmon are picking up in all the harbors, it will just get better and better,'' said Steve Palmisano of Henry's Sports & Bait. He said most are using crankbaits (jointed Shad Raps, Reef Runners, ThunderStick) or spoons, mainly glow ones in the evenings.
``Friday, Saturday and Sunday were great, Monday was [fair],'' said Mike Repa from Park Bait at Montrose harbor. ``There were a couple steelhead thrown in with it.''
``Mac'' Sloan at Mac's Bait Shop on East 75th said a fisherman landed one close to 20 pounds on 4-pound line last week. He said K.O. Wobblers and Moonshine (glow) lures have been best.
Winds today limited effort, but it's on.
