Fish of the Week: Hot king

| 3 Comments | No TrackBacks

Amanda Grzybowski's Fish of the Week symbolizes what is happening around the shoreline on our side of Lake Michigan during the extended heat wave.

FOTW07-21-10rs

Andrew Beison, a Crown Point, Ind. man who owns the Steel Leader boat, said,

I would like to nominate my friends wife Amanda Grzybowski and her King for FOTW.

I find this a very unusual occasion that adult Kings are so close to Indiana shores in July. This King was caught outside of Burns Ditch on Saturday morning. We started the morning catching some really nice Steelhead then this monster hit a Double Orange Crush spoon in 42' of water. We did hear reports of Kings in the area but did not think they would be adult fish. We did not weigh the fish but I estimate 15LBS+.

He noted a good point.

Weeks of west and southwest wind have stacked up much cold water on our side of the lake. That has led to some outstanding near-shore fishing for salmon and trout, as Beison indicated.

Right now, it is one of the hotter bites in Chicago fishing. Basically from Indiana to Chicago to Waukegan to Racine, Wis. in 30-60 feet.

FOTW tops the Midwest Fishing Report on the outdours page of the Sun-Times each Wednesday. An extended online version appears here, usually by midnight Tuesday. I am running behind in posting from tracking down a late story..

E-mail FOTW nominations to outdoordb@sbcglobal.net.

15 pound salmon for FOTW? Oh I see, this is the Quick hits version.

I've always said that there are two main components to FOTW: a good story and a good photo, the best FOTW have both. Beside, this nicely illustrated what is happening with cold water near shore.

A perfect picture for FOTW in my opinion. Nothing beats Summer Kings on the Chicagoland (or Indiana) Lakefront.
