Fish of the Week: 50-inch muskie

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Michael Petan (left) nominated this 50-inch muskie, caught by his childhood friend Michael Blazicek on Little St. Germain in northern Wisconsin last week, for Fish of the Week.

Here's the original tale from Petan' (left in photo above):

Our family lives on the southwest side in Oak lawn and we read your column regularly. My dad loves to cut out the photos and tape them up our fridge (no magnets just tape) I think we have a photo my Dad "really" would love to see in your column and then on our fridge, like the Bowman hall of fame for us.

The enclosed photo was taken last week at Little Saint Germaine in Wisconsin and shows a 50 inch musky caught by my childhood friend Michael Blazicek and frantically netted by myself Michael Petan, we have been fishing together since kindergarten. A group of childhood friends head up north every year for the last 15 years in hope of a "beast" and Michael got one! Caught at about 9:00 pm! Be careful what you wish for!

In a couple e-mail exchanges with Petan, who said both men are now 53, he added this note:
When you see 50 inch fish "live" you really gain even more respect for musky, the size and the strenght and we obviously did release the fish and he survived the ordeal as we did!

FOTW tops the Midwest Fishing Report on the outdours page of the Sun-Times each Wednesday. An extended online version appears here, usually by midnight Tuesday.
