Going into a long holiday weekend, let me digress into one of my favorite ruminations on local ponds and lakes around Chicago fishing to open the Midwest Fishing Report.

Emiquon: Tagged bass

LEWISTOWN, Ill.--It must be my year for tagged fish, first a PIT tag in a muskie at Webster Lake earlier this month, then a Floy tag in this largemouth at Emiquon Preserve on June 19.


I believe that is ``Jumbo Jimmy'' Baczek repeating as champ at Henry's eighth annual perch derby at Northerly Island on Saturday.

So the youngest and his two running mates came ripping through the back door a couple days ago and shouted in chorus, ``We caught a frog.''


Here are the river updates for the Midwest Fishing Report with some nice suggestions for Chicago fishing. Ken Gortowski's suggestion to consider the Apple is an interesting one.

It's the first weekend of summer, and there is no surprise in having a good mix for the Wild Weekend Wanderings around Chicago outdoors.

A beautiful 27-inch walleye was among the 100-plus fish collected Thursday for tagging in the Kankakee River Valley Fishing Derby.

What I loved reading about the Cabela's King Kat Tournament Trail's $10,000.00 Super Event on the Rock River at Dixon this weekend was the catfish big enough at 43.6 pounds to take second place by itself.

NORTH WEBSTER, Ind.--We were barely on the water at Indiana's fabled Webster Lake 30 minutes when Cary Gelfond boated a fat 37.5-inch muskie.

We found perch just off Chicago Light this morning.

Mike Skwira sent a chilling report--``The Silence of the Lambs''--on the area around the latest officially-sanctioned fish kill on Chicago waterways, the second such deliberate fish kill within half a year.


Perch on the Chicago lakefront and Wisconsin's free fishing weekend lead this Midwest Fishing Report, but, considering the storms overnight, I am going to hold off on area river reports until later today or tomorrow as a separate report.

Last Wednesday, Charlie ``Poorboy'' Patrick was fishing a Lucky Strike goby-imitator, Carolina-rigged, on the Chicago lakefront when he caught one of Illinois' all-time smallmouth bass, earning Fish of the Week honors..
