In a bit of surprise, Illinois youth hunters in both the north and south zones improved on the reported harvest from 2009.
In the north zone, 440 turkeys were reported, compared to 363 last year, during the youth hunt over the weekend, said forest wildlife program manager Paul Shelton.
On the weekend of March 27-28, youth hunters in the south zone reported 297, compared to 254 last spring.
Numbers are not yet out for the first few days of the first spring season in the south zone. We will post when they come.
