Labs remain the most popular dog. That's not a surprise, but there were a couple surprises in the top breeds for Chicago, in figures from 2009 pulled together by the American Kennel Club. Notably, bulldogs were third, John Drummond..

Here's the Chicago top five from the AKC:

Chicago's Most Popular Breeds 2009

1. Labrador Retriever
2. German Shepherd Dog
3. Bulldog
4. Yorkshire Terrier
5. Golden Retriever

``Although its top two breeds are standing strong, Chicagoans remain ahead of the national trend with local favorite the Bulldog in the third spot,'' said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. ``Its short, stocky body was practically made to withstand the weather in the Windy City''

Not sure what it means that the bulldog is so much higher in Chicago. Homage to Drummond?
