Chicagoan David Kolecke shot the buck of his life in Illinois' first firearm deer season near Stockton, and his son Jason nominated him for a worthy Buck of the Week.
BOTW heads the Illinois Hunting Report in the outdoors page of the Sun-Times on Wednesdays, as long as apt photos and stories come in. An extended online version appears here on Tuesdays.
Here's the word from Jason:
Attached is a picture of a 16 point buck my father that took this weekend. He accidentally shot three points of the right side off, but we found it and the taxidermist should be able to put it back on. This is the first big deer he has ever taken. I have been hunting with him since I was 10, so about 25 years. It was chasing two does on dead sprint when he shot the first time. I hunt about 200 yards from his stand and could hear the buck snorting and grunting from at least 500 yards away. I would like to nominate him for the buck of the week. His name is David M. Kolecke and we hunt in Stockton, IL, but we are from Chicago. Thank you so much.
Jason's story of his dad's big buck reminded me of a long tale about a shot-off antler and a necklace 15 years later. But that's a story for another day.
