So I made it down theWit Hotel Saturday afternoon, and took a breath.

Yes, I rappelled all 27 floors (I'm that high dot) on the media day for Skyline Plunge! Chicago, a fundraiser for the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago.

``Skyline Plunge! Chicago,'' the formal event, with close to 100 volunteers rappelling down the hotel, is today. The goal is to raise more than $100,000. Go to www.lungchicago.org.

If you are in the area of Lake and State, I highly recommend stopping by to watch. And I highly recommend pitching in online to help the descenders with fundraising.

It is something to behold.

With a distinctive lightening bolt, theWit is hard to miss on the northeast corner of State and Lake.

Before I forget, thanks to Susanna Kalnes of Extra Mile Public Relations, LLC for the photos.

I'm not in mid-life crisis, at least I don't think so.

Maybe my agreeing to do it goes back to some deep-seated guilt over being a reformed and redeemed former smoker. I quit a couple weeks before our second boy was born, and it will 13 years without a cig come New Year's Day.

There was less fear than I expected. in part because the crew members from Over the Edge were very intense in their prep work before they kicked us over.

No, they didn't really kick us over, they waited for us to back off the ledge.

A couple more floors and I was on State Street and saw my wife and kids again.

It was time.

I am glad I did not see the full impact of this photo by Susanna, the full Monty, so to speak, before I took the plunge.

We had spun around the block to make sure we had the right hotel before my wife and kids dropped me off. They returned later to watch.

In that quick glance, it didn't seem that big from Lake and State.

Big enough when you kicking off the glass.
