Stray Casts will intelligently report and observe, hopefully with a touch of wit, on daily occurrences, reports and releases related to Chicago-area outdoors from bucks to bass to birds to bugs

Confluences: To big smallmouth

The plan had simply been to show naturalist Joel Greenberg where the Des Plaines and Kankakee join to form the Illinois River (below). But Friday turned into so much more.

Bill Anderson landed this 20-inch beauty shortly after I caught an 18-incher we had thought would be fish of the day.

Those were the treat fish of the day.

But it was simply nice to be out with two people I enjoy being with for their curiosity and wonder of the outdoors.

And to see my friend Joel enjoy his first time being on the water where the rivers joined.

Sighting a very early black-legged kittiwake shortly after we took this photo only converged to make for an even more outstanding day.
