Cast and blast: Blast

Even in southern Illinois, the sunflowers are behind.

But we had a wonderful hunt for doves east of Rend Lake this evening on opening day of dove season in Illinois.

For nearly all of us, it was a very humbling experience as we saw just how rusty we were.

Todd Gessner had gathered some friends and outdoor sorts like myself and Don Dziedzina of Illinois Outdoors to kick off a sample of the first blast and cast, morning crappie fishing then afternoon dove hunting, for Todd Gessner Outdoors.

I like the idea a lot and wish more businessmen in the Illinois' outdoor world came up with such ideas.

Hunting success varied from limits to a few birds in hand.

The evening was topped with Todd grilling burgers as the night settled in at field's edge.

Todd and fellow guide Jason Johns figure the dove hunting should hold another two or three weeks with the sunflowers taking longer to dry this year.

Dale it was good being able to hunt next to you. Thanks for your help. I was able to get some video for an Illinois Outdoors TV show with Dale harvesting a few birds.

I've often said on my TV show that southern Illinois and the Rend Lake Resort is my home away from home. Being only four and a half hours south of Chicago's southern suburbs, that makes great fishing and hunting not that far away.
