Northerly Island: Perch derby carp

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Other fish highlighted the perch derby at Northerly Island Saturday. The best came shortly after the event concluded at 9 a.m.

Chicago carping guru Paul Pezalla arrived about the time contestants were packing up and unpacked his European-style techno carp fishing. And promptly lost a good one (I blame Ken ``The Lakefront Lip'' Schneider for bringing bad luck as the net man.).

But then Paul popped this 28-2, followed five minutes later by a 27-plus.

I had to laugh.

When Paul pulled up to park at Northerly Island, I told him about a 10-pound carp that Anthony Sopata caught on his pole with help and netting by Jeff Klemenswicz shortly after the derby opened at 5 a.m..

Paul said 10-pounders were common there, and most days they expect to catch a 20-plus. Which he proved very shortly.

More on Northerly Island fish and derby coming.
