Free fishing days should highlight this weekend wanderings. Except that I would hope all regular readers already buy licenses.
This week's weekend wanderings will be clipped and tight. I want a couple hours of sleep before being at Heidecke for the 6 a.m. opening today.
FREE FISHING DAYS: Illinois: Today through Monday, no fishing licenses or stamps are required, other regulations apply. Wisconsin: Sunday and Saturday residents and nonresidents can fish Wisconsin waters without a fishing license. Sunday is also State Park Open House Day (free admission). Indiana: Saturday and Sunday is free fishing weekend, but it only applies to Indiana residents. Michigan: It is next weekend, June 13-14. Residents and non-residents can fish without a license, other regulations apply.
KIDS STUFF: I had hoped to take my kids up to this, but we can't make it for Lake Geneva Fishing Club's 19th annual free kids fish outing at Big Foot Beach State Park in , Lake Geneva, Wis. on Sunday. Go to lakegenevafishingclub.com/kidsday.htm
CLEANUP CORRECTION: The Illinois Smallmouth Alliance is holding a river clean-up and benthic macrofauna demo at the mouth of Rock Creek at Kankakee River State Park at 9 a.m. Sunday. The date was incorrect in Wednesday's paper.
BOWFISHING: The AMS Grass Lake Championship is out of Halings Marina from 6 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Call Ed Devries at (708) 257-5700.
ARCHERY: There's a clinic at Lincoln Park Archery Club from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Go to lincolnparkarcheryclub.org/clinics.html
WADING THE KANKAKEE: Finally hope to do it this weekend.
PICKING WILD ASpARAGUS: I've about given up finding any this spring in northeast Illinois.
BIGTIME CATFISH TOURNAMENT: Cabela's King Kat Tournament Trail's special $10,000 Super Event is on the Rock River at Dixon on Saturday. I should be there, but will be elsewhere. Go to www.kingkatusa.com.
LAKEFRONT PERCH: When will they finally be in to stay for a bit?
PERSONAL PICKS: I will fish Heidecke this morning, then the Chain for walleye on Saturday. If the perch storm the shores, I will put in a sunrise on the lakefront. Otherwise, I hope to get at least an hour or so finally wading the Kankakee, but that's preobably dreaming. Speaking of dreaming, I am still keeping an eye open for wild asparagus.
