Fish of the Week: Father-son smallmouth tale

I mislaid this wonderful smallmouth.

Fortunately, Mark Bulaw sent a reminder, and it warmed my heart to dig up this photo of a 20-inch smallmouth bass his son Christopher caught and released on the DuPage River on Oct. 4. The 13-year-old from Wheaton earns a belated Fish of the Week honor.

FOTW tops the Midwest Fishing Report each Wednesday in the Sun-Times. An extended online version is posted here usually by midnight Tuesday.

Enclosed is a photo of a 20" smallmouth bass my 13 yr. old son Christopher Bulaw caught & released on 10/4/08 in the Dupage river. The fish was spotted in the river by my son but I was not able to see the fish until later when it appeared downriver. The fish was caught on a small jig/twister fished on the bottom.

``In addition to the smallmouth, Christopher has caught numerous bass this summer in local ponds. His best catch has been a 20.5" 4# 7 oz. largemouth caught in July in a local park pond.

Way to go! We saw a lot of nice smallies on the DuPage River this summer, but we were only able to land a couple. None of them were as nice as this whopper!
