For Isabella Grimaldi, 3 seemed about the right age to start fishing.
As much for the photo and story her mother Jody sent as much as anything, Isabella and the bluegill she caught at Whalen Lake in Bolingbrook earn Fish of the Week honors.
FOTW tops the Midwest Fishing Report each Wednesday in the Sun-Times.
Here is the story from the proud mom Jody.
``[In early September], I brought my 3-year-old daughter, Isabella, to the Bass Pro shop in Bolingbrook to look at the fantastic fish tank. Needless to say, we ended up walking out of the store with a Barbie fishing pole, tackle and live bait as she wanted to catch her own "fishies," as she called them.
So the next morning, I took Isabella and my best friend/avid fisherman Chris to Whalen Lake in Bolingbrook. Little Isabella quickly made friends with the squirmy nightcrawlers that were jammed into our bait box, and she was a little sad when Daddy had to hook one. However, Isabella's old enough to know that is what the fishies like to eat, so she got over the baiting process quickly.
With pink Barbie light-up pole in hand, I helped her cast her first one out a whopping five feet (hey, any cast that hits the water is a good cast, right?)! Within a blink of the eye, we felt a nibble and her eyes lit up!!! At that very moment a fishergirl was born.
Attached is the first fishie my little Isabella reeled in (a large Blue Gill...naturally). You will see in her expression just how proud she was. We proceeded to catch another four fish that memorable day and Isabella be-friended each one while they flopped around in our bucket.
As of today, a week later, we now have two canisters of live bait in our refrigerator (Mommy's not too excited about that) -- waiting to be hooked this weekend.''
