Outdoor things to do, indoors and out, this weekend.

shabbona1

1) Shabbona Lake produced a pig of a muskie on Thursday.

I know because of a friend of mine took the picture posted on the message board at www.shabbonalake.com.

The muskie is a beaut, but bass and catfish, as usual about now, are still the top choices there.

2) Enough perch came in with the cold water in the last week that kids are catching perch on the Chicago lakefront. There were some serious jumbos being caught at Montrose.

The easiest spots for kids has been at the mouth of Montrose or along the south rocks (or what we used to call the south rocks).

Perch fishing is closed in Illinois to those 16 and older on Lake Michigan during July, but those 15 and younger may catch and keep up to 10 daily.

For those with boats, Cal harbor has had some good fishing in the weed beds. Most of it is in the reciprocal waters, so it is fishable for those with an Indiana license.

3) For waders, the Kankakee again is the choice. It's in good shape. Just do it, wade for smallmouth or catfish. Looks like a perfect sizzling weekend to do it.

4) The other top pattern is a summer one too, the one I recommended last week, fishing artificial frogs in the lily pads or slop for largemouth bass.

On some lakes, the growth has finally nearly caught up to where it normally is in mid-July and we are starting to reach that point where the growth is thick enough to be prohibitive to getting around or fishing.

5) Speaking of kids, there's a free fishing derby at Wolf Lake Park in Hammond from 8 a.m.-noon. Saturday. The rain date is Sunday.

The Optimist Club got behind this idea and will give the first 125 kids, 15 and younger, a rod and reel.
