The Blackhawks didn't wait around for free agency to begin on July 1 this offseason to fill out their roster.

On Tuesday, the Hawks officially announced that Jamal Mayers received a one-year extension. But more important, defenseman Johnny Oduya also got a three-year deal.

The Blackhawks were in desperate need of a defenseman, especially with Steve Montador and Niklas Hjalmarsson battling injuries. The market was thin but general manager Stan Bowman grabbed one in veteran Johnny Oduya.
