Hawks coach Joel Quenneville made it official Thursday. Goalie Cristobal Huet won't be at training camp.

Asked if Huet was going to be at camp on Thursday, Quenneville simply said "No."

The Hawks' plan is go with new starter Marty Turco and longtime prospect Corey Crawford as the backup. Hannu Toivonen also will get a chance, competing for time this preseason.

Huet has a cap hit of more than $5 million and that simply doesn't work for the Hawks, who made several salary cap-driven moves this summer (as everyone knows). Huet is expected to be loaned to the Swiss League.

''Nothing is finalized yet," Hawks GM Stan Bowman said earlier this month about the potential deal. "I don't have any new news to report. It's looking like that's a possibility. Hopefully it will work out for him and for us, but it's not finalized yet. It's ongoing. We're trying to get it wrapped up."

The Hawks would still pay Huet if he is loaned to Europe, but he would be off their books. Huet played in the Swiss League before coming to the NHL.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Cristobal Huet will start for the first time since coming down with the flu last week against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.

Huet battled the flu all last week and hasn't played since the Philadelphia Flyers rallied to beat the Hawks on March 13.

ch.jpgThe Blackhawks have always stood by their goaltending -- from the top on down.

General manager Stan Bowman has.

Coach Joel Quennville has.

And so have the players -- the ones not minding nets.

But, it's still seen as the one true weakness of a team fully capable of winning the Stanley Cup by analysts, various media and fans.

Madden.jpgHere's some quick notes from Thursday's Hawks practice:

joel.jpgThey haven't been pretty, dominating wins. But the Dallas Stars have definitely gotten the better of Blackhawks so far this season.

The Stars have beaten the Hawks in both meetings this year, 4-3 on Oct. 17 and 5-4 on Dec. 29. Cristobal Huet lost the first game, and then was chased in the second after squandering the Hawks' lead. The Hawks host the Stars on Tuesday.

goalies.jpgMark Bernard, the Hawks' general manager of minor league affiliations, was in net for Thursday's practice at the United Center ... because Antti Niemi is still "quarantined" with an illness.

huet.jpgRALEIGH, N.C. -- And I thought this trip was a chance to a get away from winter for a few days. A snow storm has descended on Raleigh and there is about eight inches of snow on the ground.

Anyways, here are some updates for tonight's game vs. the Carolina Hurricanes:
