Back from playing for Canada at the International Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland and Sweden, Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp said his wrist is fine and has already started to train for next season.

NEW YORK -- In what has become a tumultuous summer for the Blackhawks, general manager Stan Bowman had some good news to report on Wednesday.

"[Marian Hossa is] doing much better," he said after the NHL GM meetings concluded in New York before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals between the Kings and Devils.

Jamal Mayers could have been irate and looked for work elsewhere. Few would blame him if he did after he was scratched in the playoffs by Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville.

Mayers went from being one of the Hawks' more consistent players in the regular season to being a healthy scratch against the Coyotes in the first round.

"It's tough as a competitor," Mayers said.

Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said Tuesday that the organization was disappointed with star forward Patrick Kane for his actions during a trip to Madison, Wis. not longer after their season concluded.

The Blackhawks didn't wait around for free agency to begin on July 1 this offseason to fill out their roster.

On Tuesday, the Hawks officially announced that Jamal Mayers received a one-year extension. But more important, defenseman Johnny Oduya also got a three-year deal.

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville feels like it will ultimately be his decision when deciding who replaces the recently fired Mike Haviland on the team's bench.

Whether that's truly the case remains to be seen. But Quenneville was asked what he's looking for in an assistant coach going forward.

In a surprise decision, the Blackhawks fired assistant coach Mike Haviland on Tuesday.

It didn't take long for Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman to replace assistant GM Marc Bergevin, who left the team last week to run the Montreal Canadiens.

As expected, the move came from within.

Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres and the National Hockey League Players' Association will apparently appeal his 25-game suspension for his shoulder-to-head hit on Blackhawks star Marian Hossa in Game 3 of their first-round series.

The last time fans got to see Blackhawks star winger Marian Hossa this season, he was get carried off the United Center ice on a stretcher.

It was a scary scene that took place on April 17 during Game 3 of the Hawks' first-round series against the Phoenix Coyotes, which they lost in six games. And, it was an illegal shoulder-to-head hit from forward Raffi Torres that caused it.

Hossa didn't play the rest of the series with a severe concussion, but there is good news. He's doing better now.

For the second summer in a row, the Blackhawks have an opening behind general manager Stan Bowman. Assistant general manager Marc Bergevin officially left the Hawks to run the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.
