Blackhawks acquire Toews' brother; Segal has two-way contract

The Toews family is officially a Blackhawks family. The Hawks acquired Jonathan Toews' younger brother, David, from the New York Islanders for future considerations on Friday.

While not as heralded as his older brother, David, who also plays center, had a solid season for the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings last year. The 21-year-old had 20 goals, 28 assists and 16 penalty minutes in 60 regular-season games.

David was a third-round pick of the Islanders in 2008 and spent two years at the University of North Dakota, where Jonathan also played. David has stayed with Jonathan at times this summer in Chicago, and the two have always trained together.

David (5-10, 196 pounds) has been added to the Hawks' roster for the 2011 Toronto Maple Leafs Rookie Tournament this weekend at General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ontario.

On Segal

The addition of winger Brandon Segal should increase competition at training camp, but it should be noted that Segal's one-year deal with the Hawks is a two-way contract.

The 28-year-old spent the last two years in the Dallas Stars organization, recording five goals and 10 points for the Stars in a career-high 46 games last season.

Segal will compete for a spot on the fourth line at training camp. But with Daniel Carcillo, Jamal Mayers, Ben Smith and Marcus Kruger in front of him, he's expected to be sent to the Rockford IceHogs, where he'll take a leadership role.
