Here's the Blackhawks roster for their exhibition game Friday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the United Center. It's the Hawks' sixth preseason game. They are 2-2-1.

Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp practiced for the first time this preaseason Friday after an emergency appendectomy on Sept. 12 sidelined him at training camp.

NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan remained tough in his rulings this preseason and suspended Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith the rest of the preseason and five regular-season games for his shoulder-to-head hit on Blackhawks forward Ben Smith.

Blackhawks star winger Marian Hossa will wear two numbers for the time being. It's his way of remembering a good friend.

Hossa has former NHL forward Pavol Demitra's No. 38 on his skates. Demitra, a fellow Slovak, died in the plane crash that claimed the Russian pro team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl earlier this month.

Here's the Blackhawks' exhibition roster for their game against the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center on Wednesday. This is the Hawks' fifth game of the preseason. They are 1-2-1.

With the competition for the backup goalie spot nearing an end, rookie Alexander Salak said he's happy with how he's performed this preseason, which is good because it looks like he's only going to be facing teammates for the time being.

The Patrick-Kane-at-center experiment will face its first real test Wednesday at the United Center when the Blackhawks host the Detroit Red Wings for their fifth preseason game.

Oh yeah, apparently Kane's surgically repaired left wrist is good to go too.

The idea of playing Patrick Kane -- one of the best wingers in the NHL -- at center raised a lot of eyebrows for its unexpectedness, but also concerns for do-everything Patrick Sharp.

Sharp, who has played center and wing successfully in the past, has been sidelined since undergoing an emergency appendectomy just days before training camp began for the Blackhawks.

But coach Joel Quenneville insists the two are unrelated.

DETROIT -- Here's the Blackhawks roster for their exhibition game in Detroit against the Red Wings. It's their fourth game of the preseason. They are 1-2.

Here's the Blackhawks roster for their third preseason game. They host the Washington Capitals tonight at the United Center. The Hawks are 0-2 in exhibition play.

PITTSBURGH -- The numbers -- four goals allowed in less than 30 minutes of action -- don't look good. But Ray Emery remains upbeat as he fights for the backup goalie job with rookie Alexander Salak.

Here's the Blackhawks roster for their second exhibition game this preseason. They play the Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday night.

Marian Hossa joined his Blackhawks teammates on the ice for the first time Wednesday following the tragic loss of his friend, Pavol Demitra, and the birth of his daughter, Mia.

Hossa remained in his native Slovakia after a plane crash on Sept. 7 claimed the lives of Lokmotive Yaroslavl, a Russian pro team which included Demitra. He and his wife, Jana, celebrated the birth of their daughter just two days later.

SASKATOON, Sask. -- The first preseason game of the 2011-12 season is in the books. The Blackhawks lost 4-2 to the Edmonton Oilers in Saskatoon with Jamal Mayers and Rostislav Olesz scoring.

The most impressive player in Saskatoon?

The Toews brothers and the battle between Ray Emery and Alexander Salak for the backup goalie spot will take center stage for the Blackhawks during their exhibition opener Tuesday night against the Edmonton Oilers in Saskatoon, Sask.

"I'm excited about the start of the camp," coach Joel Quenneville said. "Now that we're playing games, all of a sudden training camp has been flying up to this pace. Once you start playing exhibition games it seems the pace gets even faster. We've got a lot of young guys playing in the first couple games. We'll get a look at most of these guys. We've got a young lineup tomorrow so it will be nice to see these guys play in an NHL game."

Here's the roster:

Patrick Kane looked like himself Sunday at Johnny's IceHouse West. He was stick-handling past defenders, putting pressure on opposing goalies and showing off his coveted offensive skills.

As far as his surgically repaired wrist, it held up just fine in his first scrimmage during Blackhawks training camp.

Ray Emery's remarkable comeback from hip surgery will be storied often as the competition between him and Alexander Salak for the backup goalie job unfolds this preseason.

"I think I'm the only professional athlete missing a fibula right now," Emery joked Saturday after his on-ice work concluded at training camp.

Patrick Sharp spoke for the first time since his emergency appendectomy, telling the Blackhawks faithful at the United Center he's hoping to be ready for opening night.

Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews knew word of him accidentally knocking over a young hockey player on the ice at a camp in Canada had spread when the texts from his friends kept pouring in.

What he didn't completely know was that video of it went viral. First, here's the video:

Hockey's somber offseason marked by enforcer deaths and the plane crash that killed most of a Russian pro hockey team continues to cause ripples throughout the NHL.

Marian Hossa's absence from the opening days of Blackhawks training camp is another example. Hossa was a close friend of fellow Slovakian star Pavol Demitra, who died in the plane crash Sept. 6.

If it were the middle of the season, Patrick Kane would be playing right now. But since it's the preseason, Kane, who is still wearing on splint on his surgically repaired left wrist, is being careful.

Blackhawks singer Jim Cornelison has delivered rousing renditions of the Star-Spangled Banner at Bears games before. But his latest may be the most memorable.

Cornelison performed before the Bears hosted the Atlanta Falcons this past Sunday on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11.

Here's a video from the stands from fan Jim Chase (@chasedawg).

Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp is expected to miss most of training camp and the preseason after undergoing an emergency appendectomy Monday night.

The Toews family is officially a Blackhawks family. The Hawks acquired Jonathan Toews' younger brother, David, from the New York Islanders for future considerations on Friday.

While not as heralded as his older brother, David, who also plays center, had a solid season for the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings last year. The 21-year-old had 20 goals, 28 assists and 16 penalty minutes in 60 regular-season games.

Former Blackhawks Alexander Karpovtsev and Igor Korolev were among those killed in a plane crash in Western Russia Wednesday that claimed the lives of most of the Lokomotiv hockey team.
