Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman checked one thing off his extended to-do list Wednesday when the team announced that Marc Bergevin was promoted to assistant GM.
Bergevin takes over the role vacated by Kevin Cheveldayoff, who became GM of Winnipeg's new NHL franchise after two years with the Hawks.
A source said the Hawks mainly looked internally for a replacement. Bergevin is in his seventh year with the Hawks, spending the last two seasons as the team's director of player personnel.
"As an organization we're fortunate to have the depth of talent available that allows us to promote from within," Bowman said in a statement.
Norm Maciver takes over as director of player personnel after being director of player development the last three years. The Hawks also announced that senior advisor Scotty Bowman received a contract extension.
"Marc and Norm have combined for more than 40 years of NHL experience, as players, behind the bench and in the front office," Bowman said. "Marc possesses an unrivaled understanding of the Chicago Blackhawks professional and amateur scouting operations, as well as those around the league, while Norm has overseen the development of our draft picks and prospects into contributors at the professional level.
"Both have a comprehensive understanding of the Blackhawks way of doing business in pursuit of our goal of consistent excellence."
Cheveldayoff's primary duties were handling the everyday management of the salary cap. Bergevin is expected to have the same responsibilities. A former defenseman and Hawks draft pick, Bergevin spent 20 years in the NHL, including playing 1,191 games with the Hawks. He also saw time as an assistant under coach Joel Quenneville during the 2008-09 season.
The Hawks also announced that Kyle Davidson was named hockey administration coordinator.

Same lugs that were there when the RFA mailing mishap occurred and not a one of them caught it, giving just the excuse McDonough needed to oust Dale Tallon. A pity too Scotty Bowman gets an extension---to date its clear he hasnt given much advice to his son on player selection. Not with that crop he swaped for last season. Abysmal. They should have gone out and hired a former real GM to be sonny boy's assistant. These guys are all "also rans" and havent been scooped up by other Organizations for a reason---mediocre at best. Nice guys, loyal, but they were around when the RFA mess up happened and it cost the Hawks uneeded payouts and a GM his job when it shouldnt have.
