PHOENIX - Mike Shanahan still believes in quarterback Jay Cutler, whom he drafted 11th overall in 2006, when they were in Denver.

So Shanahan didn't hesitate when new Bears coach Marc Trestman connected with him to ask him some questions about the quarterback. Shanahan.jpg

"I've known Marc for a long time, and he knows I spent some time with Jay, and he asked me a couple of things that I shared with him," Shanahan said. "I know that Marc feels very good about Jay, and I think the world of Jay. He's a very talented guy. I just think he'll get better and better."

Cutler steadily improved under Shanahan with the Broncos, and he earned a Pro Bowl berth after the 2008 season. But after Shanahan's surprise ouster, Cutler was traded to the Bears by Josh McDaniels.

Cutler, 29, enters the final year of his current contract.

Asked how Trestman and Cutler will work together, Shanahan said, "I think it'll work well."

Shanahan didn't elaborate.
